The contract decides the purpose before the price does
Do not pick a personal loan because the form looks familiar. Read whether business expenses are allowed, whether a startup is treated differently from a company that already operates, and whether the provider insists on a consumer purpose. Mixed personal and business spending, and some industries, can be restricted. If the agreement bans the use, an attractive payment is irrelevant.
Answer the application’s purpose question with the use you actually intend. Choosing a different purpose because you think it will glide through review is a bad fact to have in the file if the creditor later says the proceeds were misused. If the purpose is allowed, the next question is structural: do you want this debt as your own obligation, or do you want a product built around the business?
Who owes the money, and which “business loan” you mean
Borrow in your own name and you are generally the one who must pay, even when every dollar went into the company. A slow season, a closed shop, or revenue that never showed up does not cancel the personal-loan payment. Test that payment against rent, food, and the job you already have. A first-year forecast is not cash.
“Business loan” is a shelf of products: term loans, lines of credit, equipment financing, invoice financing, commercial real estate, SBA-backed credit, and microloans. Each can differ on who may borrow, what collateral is pledged, whether you sign a personal guarantee, and how repayment works. A business label does not wall off your personal finances. A personal guarantee can pull the debt back onto you. An unsecured personal loan and a business loan secured only by equipment are different risks. Read who the borrower is, who guarantees, and what happens in default. Cost lines to copy from a real offer are on Rates & Fees.
SBA programs and the interest-deduction question
SBA-backed credit is arranged by lenders and by nonprofit intermediaries, not by a personal-loan referral site. The agency’s loan overview is where to read the current menu. In plain terms, 7(a) covers many operating needs, 504 is built around large fixed assets that qualify, and microloans are smaller sums that approved nonprofits extend to eligible firms and to some nonprofit child-care centers. Who may apply, what the money may buy, dollar caps, ownership rules, collateral, and guarantees all move. GameBank does not place these loans. If one might fit, use the agency’s pages and a lender the SBA authorizes.
If personal-loan proceeds do go into the business, keep the deposit, the transfer, the invoices, and any slice you spent personally. The IRS discusses limits on deducting business interest in a FAQ updated August 19, 2026. Interest has to be properly tied to a trade or business, and allocation rules can apply. A loan titled in your name does not make every dollar of interest deductible. A tax professional, not this page, applies that to your return.
Household example: a mixer, a deposit, and a forbidden use
Household example. Priya Shah works nights at a hospital in Durham and wants a Saturday bakery stall. She needs about $8,000: a commercial kitchen deposit and a used mixer. She has $1,500 saved. One personal-loan agreement she reads bars business and commercial use. She does not apply “for home improvement” to get around that sentence. The payment on the ad is irrelevant because the purpose does not fit.
A second provider’s agreement allows a business expense. She still does not price the loan off hoped-for stall sales. She asks whether she could make the payment from hospital wages if the stall earns nothing for three months. She also lists net cash after any fee, because an $8,000 face amount that arrives as less will not cover both the deposit and the mixer. She glances at the SBA microloan description as a separate path with its own intermediary, not as a product GameBank can hand her. No rate here is her rate, and nothing says either door will open.
Checklist before business money comes from a personal loan
- The agreement permits this business use, including a startup if that is what you are funding.
- The application purpose matches the real use.
- You know the legal borrower, every guarantor, and every asset pledged.
- Net proceeds, after fees, cover the items that must be paid now. Later costs are listed separately.
- The payment still works if business revenue is late, using personal income you already receive.
- You compared APR, fees, term, and total cost on each real offer, not a category average.
- You looked at a business-specific product or current SBA information if that path might fit.
- Records will show where the proceeds went. You did not assume a tax deduction.
Claims that should stop the conversation
- “Any personal loan can fund any business.” Permitted use is contractual. Some agreements forbid it.
- “Borrowing personally keeps the company and your household separate.” You still owe the personal loan if the company fails.
- “A business loan cannot touch you.” Personal guarantees and personal collateral are common. Read the signature pages.
- “An SBA product is assured if you apply.” Programs have eligibility rules and are delivered by lenders or intermediaries. GameBank does not offer them.
- “Interest on a personal loan used for business is always deductible.” Allocation and limits apply. Use the IRS FAQ or a tax professional.
- “The business will make the payments, so your budget does not matter.” Test the payment against months of thin or zero business income.
- Leaving the purpose question blank or false. That is not a shortcut. It is a problem if the use is later challenged.
Questions about personal loans and business borrowing
Can a personal loan fund a new company?
Only if that provider’s agreement allows it. Some allow business use, including startups, and others block commercial purposes. Confirm before you apply or spend.
Is business financing always the better tool?
No. Business products differ in cost, paperwork, collateral, and guarantees. Compare the structures you can actually get, including a personal loan whose contract permits the use.
Does a business loan shield my personal credit and my house?
Not by the label. Some products require a personal guarantee or look at personal credit. The agreement names who pays if the business does not.
Can I deduct the interest automatically?
No blanket rule does that. Deductibility can depend on how proceeds were used, how interest is allocated, the business structure, and current limits. Start with the IRS business-interest FAQ or a tax professional.
Does GameBank place SBA or business loans?
No. GameBank takes requests for personal loans and passes them to providers. It does not place SBA credit, and it does not map every business-lending product on the market.
